Moster University

In preparation for their upcoming film "Monsters University," a prequel to Monsters Inc, Pixar have actually made a University website! Go have a look, there's so much detail put into it, including a site map, different classes and a store. (To be perfectly honest I prefer it to our own University's website.)

Design in Context Character

Here is my character that I drew after researching the 1930's.

His name is Barnard (which means bold as a bear) Hertz. His parents named him this in the hopes that he would be a strong willed, masculine child. Unfortunately for them he is a huge weeny. He is 10 years old and has just joined the Hitler Youth, he believes in the Nazi parties principles as does his family but he doesn't fit in with the other children due to his lack of physical strength and timid personality. His favourite part of the H.Y is the uniform which he wears with pride.

1930's Moodboard

For our Design In Context sessions we have each been given a different time period and have to create a character that reflects the period. I was given 1930's and have decided that my character will be a child brought up in Nazi Germany, immersed in the Hilter Youth culture.

We've also to make a moodboard that we feel best captures the atmosphere of that time period. Here's mine.

My moodboard mainly focuses on the Nazi's rise to power and the war itself being declared as it ties in with my character. I've also included photographs that show America during the "Dirty Thirties" when the Great Depression hit and the land became infertile. I've placed the cheeseburger over this image as I thought it was ironic that the cheeseburger was created during this time. The 1930's was also when the Mickey Mouse comics were first published.

ISSUU

So for our first project of the year we had to choose a location in groups of two or three and engage with it, then our work would be compiled onto an online publication. Myself and my partner chose Cafe Sol because we thought it was quite funny that it's almost an imitation of a Mediterranean style cafe yet it's in the North of England (with a northern English menu). Here's some sketchbook work.

And here's the link to our magazine.

Vodkaaaah

I went and bought a bottle of Absolute vodka purely for the artwork on it. It's an illustration done by Jamie Hewlett (also the artist for The Gorillaz). I'm in love with his style and the bottle is gorgeous! (The fact that it was vodka may also have something to do with the purchase)

Disposables

Was reading about a few projects done using disposable cameras so I decided to go and buy some. These are just messing around, will probably do some cool stuff with them soon. I really like the quality these cameras give you, gone back in time to 1994
